Open source software has many benefits, including:

There are several reasons. First of all, we think that Bacula’s AGPL v3 license is the most suitable for our services. Secondly, Bacula’s community is a trusted one – there is a much smaller risk of malicious code being introduced into the software. Thirdly, Bacula is use by huge governmental institutions and therefore is reliable and scalable. There are much less dependencies which, if not maintained, can affect the whole software stack.

Even if all your infrastructure is cloud-based, you still need to have backups. There are a few reasons for this:

• Cloud providers can still experience outages. While cloud providers have a good track record of uptime, they are not immune to outages.
• Your data could be deleted or corrupted. Even if your cloud provider does not experience an outage, your data could still be deleted or corrupted. This could happen due to human error, a software bug, or a cyberattack.
• Your data is still vulnerable to cyberattacks. Even if your data is stored in the cloud, it is still vulnerable to cyberattacks. Ransomware attacks, in particular, can encrypt your data and hold it hostage until you pay a ransom. Having backups in place will allow you to restore your data and avoid paying the ransom.
• You need to comply with regulations. Some regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), require businesses to keep backups of their data.

There are 2 ways to test Bacula products: 1. Bacula Enterprise trial version. This version is feature-limited and can’t be fully adopted to your infrastructure, however it can work in several typical scenarios describing how the whole solution works. 2. Proof of concept. We deploy Bacula in your own infrastructure and install specific plugins that work with your set of hypervisors, container systems, databases and other applications. This requires involvement from the client’s internal IT team.

Your existing backup solution may be more expensive that it could be with Bacula. Using open source software, you can cut backup and recovery budgets. Additionally, even if you have the backup solution, it can be vulnerable and we can help you to harden your backup system’s security.
