Overview
Challenge
- The customer needed a backup system that was able to work with virtual machines in the cloud;
- The backed up data needed to be duplicated in the cloud and on local NAS devices;
- The deduplication system was needed to save disk space;
- The reasonable pricing and a straightforwarding license model was needed.
Solution
- Because of both Global Endpoint Deduplication™ and Aligned Volume Deduplication technologies Bacula was a good fit;
- Deduplication was chosen because it worked on both client and storage daemons, saving network and storage resources;
- Deduplication was applied together with comm line compression to further reduce bandwidth usage;
- The solution worked in the cloud-only environment “out of the box”.
Results
- 2-3 weeks were spent on testing, and then the system was rolled out to production with no issues;
- 90% of the target backup size was saved using Global Endpoint Deduplication™;
- The license cost was 4-5 times less in comparison with other enterprise vendors, especially keeping in mind what is included in Bacula’s annual subscription.
