A leading cloud services company that provides a wide range of services, including cloud computing, cloud hosting, cloud storage, and cloud security.
Overview
Challenge
- With the growth of data center, the backup to tape took longer than expected (backups didn’t complete in a timely manner);
- Additional costs for tapes and libraries grew simultaneously with data volume hosted on 1000+ servers;
- There was plethora of IT systems and apps to be backed up: Windows, Linux, SQL, SharePoint, SAP and more;
- The existing backup vendor charged more than $200,000 to switched from tape to disk backups.
Solution
- The client look at open source solutions because of scalability costs;
- Initially the client deployed Bacula Community to test backups and restores speed;
- With 1000+ servers the client decided to test Bacula Enterprise to have enough time for restarts or adding new storage daemons between backups;
- The client’s infrastructure required to use Oracle plugin for 500+ Oracle DBs and also the deduplication technology.
Results
- The migration from the previous vendor took only 3 weeks;
- With Oracle plugin the client saves around 50 to 90 terabytes of on-disk volume space for backups;
- With deduplication the client additionaly saves around 60 to 80 terabytes of disk space;
- The RMAN-based backups allowed for only 3-day retention period which increased with Bacula;
- Cost saving also increased because in comparison with the previous vendor Bacula is not charging by data volume.
