Overview

A major telecommunications provider in Europe offering a wide range of telecommunications services, including mobile, landline, internet, TV, and cloud services. It also provides business solutions to businesses of all sizes.

Challenge

  • The customer’s infrastructure included 10,000 servers in 2 locations with 8 petabytes of storage capacity;
  • A private cloud for standardized SAP services was built using HP hardware and needed to be backed up;
  • The backup system should support physical, virtual and container environments, run on Windows- and Linux-based endpoints, integrate with Nagios monitoring, be able to backup SAP HANA;
  • While the customer data is growing, the backup system has to have a flexible and scalable licensing model with no data volume costs.

Solution

  1. The client tried Bacula Enterprise based on the licensing model which is free from data volume costs;
  2. Because of Bacula’s open source roots it was fairly easy for the client to integrate it with Nagious monitoring tool;
  3. Bacula’s certified SAP HANA plugin allowed for script-free backups that worked “out-of-the-box”;
  4. Bacula was scalable to 10,000+ servers without any additional tweaks to its performance.

Results

  • 400+GB databases are being backed up to tape and to disk with very large log files;
  •  Other databases being backed up include Oracle, MS SQL, DB2 and MySQL;
  •  Bacula ensures disaster recovery by replication to another data center.
