A European bank that operates as a commercial, investment, insurance and asset management bank with about 1,500 branches and 11,000 employees.
Overview
Challenge
- After the banking industry crisis in Europe the client needed to increase the efficiency of its IT budget by optimizing hardware and software performance, incl. the backup solution;
- The existing backup solution required manual operation and lacked important functionality for banking-specific Oracle and Sybase servers, and the storage was growing to 3Pb of data;
- The customer wanted to start using VTL to employ deduplication and avoid growing data volme costs.
Solution
- The client had a significant IT environment improvement in hardware and network, and chose Bacula because of its open source roots and “free-to-grow” licensing model;
- Because of Bacula’s flexibility and plugins it was fairly easy for the client to backup Oracle and Sybase-based banking applications;
- Bacula’s feature set included the backup to virtual tapes with the ability to archive, deduplicate and compress data, and manage virtual tape library (VTL) devices.
Results
- After hardware and software restructuring the client is now saving 200K EUR per year;
- Better cost control and forecast because it’s easier to manage the number of machines than the amount of data to be backed up;
